At the foundation of general dentistry is the dental checkup. In keeping with the recommendation of the American Dental Association, Dr. Carollo and Dr. Sufian would like to see you and each member of your family twice yearly for a checkup. More than an opportunity to clean and polish your teeth, these regularly schedule appointments give us the chance to closely monitor your oral health for any early signs or symptoms of dental disease. For example, did you know that in terms of frequency, tooth decay is second only to the common cold? At a checkup, we visually examine your teeth for signs of decay and we’ll also take digital x-rays when necessary, so we can find hidden decay between teeth or just below the surface.
In addition, we also perform an oral cancer screening and gum health evaluation at each checkup. When caught early, oral cancer is often treatable and curable. Gum disease is a bacterial infection that can ultimately lead to tooth loss if not treated appropriately. During a periodontal screening, one of our gentle hygienists will probe the depths of your gum pockets. Pockets that are too deep can be an early sign of gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease.
