Root Canal Therapy from Dr. John Carollo in Florham Park, NJ

480377293Root canal. Unfortunately, a bad reputation precedes it, and that’s just not fair! Thanks to advancements in dental procedures and the administration of dental anesthesia, root canal therapy is not painful. Moreover, a root canal can help you save a tooth rather than go the route of extraction. Dr. John Carollo in Florham Park, NJ, expertly and gently performs root canal therapy, so you can focus on life and not your aching tooth.

One of the primary indications of the need for a root canal is a toothache. A toothache typically occurs when a tooth becomes infected. To understand how this can happen, let’s first look at the structure of a tooth. Enamel is the protective, outer surface of a tooth. The next layer is dentin, which is softer and more sensitive. At the core of each tooth is dental pulp. With nerve and lymph tissue as well as blood vessels, the pulp is the tooth’s lifeline. If the pulp becomes infected, whether because of severe decay or traumatic injury, then the tooth begins to die. Allowed to progress, this infection can spread to the gums, jawbone and even further.

Root Canal to the Rescue

With a root canal, Dr. Carollo can arrest the infection, eliminate the pain and save the tooth. And the procedure is actually rather straightforward. Once you are comfortable and the tooth and surrounding tissue are adequately anesthetized, Dr. Carollo accesses the pulp to clear the infection and any accompanying debris. The pulp chamber is then filled with an anti-bacterial, biocompatible material and then sealed. After a few weeks when Dr. Carollo is certain that you’ve healed well, he will likely want to place a permanent crown on the tooth to restore its appearance and normal function. Until then, you’ll wear a temporary crown to protect the tooth after root canal therapy.
