The Differences Between Traditional Implant Dentures & All-on-4

March 10, 2018

Smiling senior man eating an appleWhen it comes to replacing numerous consecutive and nonconsecutive teeth or a full row of teeth, traditional partial and full dentures only restore those parts of the teeth visible in your smile. Implant supported dentures restore both the roots and crowns of missing teeth, but they aren’t always a great option for patients who have lost large amounts of healthy supportive bone and gum tissue. Luckily, there’s an innovative treatment that allows more patients than ever to receive an implant supported denture without the need for invasive preparatory grafting procedures. In this post, we’ll walk you through the differences between traditional implant dentures and All-on-4 to help you make an informed decision.

Teeth Whitening from Dr. John Carollo in Florham Park, NJ

April 15, 2015

78768689Think of spring cleaning and what comes to mind? Washing the windows, cleaning the gutters, organizing the garage, trimming the trees, whitening your teeth. What? What was that last one? Yep. There’s no better time that spring to whiten your teeth. And there’s no better dentist to trust with your teeth whitening than Dr. John Carollo in Florham Park, NJ.

As we age, our teeth succumb to staining and discoloration. This can have a number of different causes including:

  • Your favorite foods and drinks, such as strawberries, tomatoes, carrots, coffee, cola and red wine
  • Certain antibiotics, such as tetracycline
  • Tobacco use
  • Teeth grinding, which can lead to micro-cracks that hide stains
  • Falls and other injuries that cause teeth to crack, which collect staining debris
  • The unavoidable aging process

Teeth Whitening to the Rescue

While there are a number of over-the-counter options for teeth whitening, none can compare to the results you’ll see with treatment in your dentist’s office. Dr. Carollo uses Opalescence®, which contains either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide to penetrate your teeth’s outer layer—the enamel—to reach and bleach the discolored molecules inside your tooth’s middle layer, the dentin. With Opalescence, you can choose to whiten your teeth in our office or in the comfort of your own home.

Opalescence Boost is the in-office variety and contains a 40 percent hydrogen peroxide bleaching gel that whitens teeth in about one hour. Your smile will be several shades brighter after just one treatment. On the other hand, if you can’t spare the time for an in-office appointment and would rather whiten your teeth at home, then we can give you Opalescence PF. This take-home whitening kit comes with professional grade gel and custom-made trays. Simply fill the trays with gel and wear them according to Dr. Carollo’s instructions.

Root Canal Therapy from Dr. John Carollo in Florham Park, NJ

March 15, 2015

480377293Root canal. Unfortunately, a bad reputation precedes it, and that’s just not fair! Thanks to advancements in dental procedures and the administration of dental anesthesia, root canal therapy is not painful. Moreover, a root canal can help you save a tooth rather than go the route of extraction. Dr. John Carollo in Florham Park, NJ, expertly and gently performs root canal therapy, so you can focus on life and not your aching tooth.

One of the primary indications of the need for a root canal is a toothache. A toothache typically occurs when a tooth becomes infected. To understand how this can happen, let’s first look at the structure of a tooth. Enamel is the protective, outer surface of a tooth. The next layer is dentin, which is softer and more sensitive. At the core of each tooth is dental pulp. With nerve and lymph tissue as well as blood vessels, the pulp is the tooth’s lifeline. If the pulp becomes infected, whether because of severe decay or traumatic injury, then the tooth begins to die. Allowed to progress, this infection can spread to the gums, jawbone and even further.

Root Canal to the Rescue

With a root canal, Dr. Carollo can arrest the infection, eliminate the pain and save the tooth. And the procedure is actually rather straightforward. Once you are comfortable and the tooth and surrounding tissue are adequately anesthetized, Dr. Carollo accesses the pulp to clear the infection and any accompanying debris. The pulp chamber is then filled with an anti-bacterial, biocompatible material and then sealed. After a few weeks when Dr. Carollo is certain that you’ve healed well, he will likely want to place a permanent crown on the tooth to restore its appearance and normal function. Until then, you’ll wear a temporary crown to protect the tooth after root canal therapy.

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month: Bring the Kids to Dr. Carollo for Pediatric Dentistry

February 15, 2015

467777161Valentines and presidents only get one day in February. But children get the whole month! The American Dental Association has designated February for National Children’s Dental Health Month. Establishing good hygiene habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits help children set a solid foundation for a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. With this in mind, Dr. John A. Carollo would like to welcome your children and teenagers to his practice for outstanding pediatric dentistry in Florham Park, NJ.

Although Dr. Carollo would like to begin seeing your children by the time they are three years old, pediatric dentistry actually begins much earlier, and it begins with you. When you see that first pearly white erupt through your baby’s gum, it’s time to begin cleaning. Just take a soft cloth moistened with warm water and wipe your child’s baby teeth and gums after feeding. As they grow and their smiles fill out, you can begin brushing with a small, soft toothbrush and a dab of toothpaste.

Visiting Dr. Carollo for Pediatric Dentistry

When you bring your child to Dr. Carollo for a checkup, you’ll notice that we’ve gone the extra mile to make sure they’re comfortable in our office—we have books, televisions and video games. As we do with adult patients, we’ll clean your children’s teeth, evaluate the health of their gums (because children are not immune to gum disease), and examine their teeth for early signs of decay.

In addition to these standard checkup services, we may also recommend a fluoride treatment to strengthen your children’s tooth enamel and dental sealants, which are applied to molars for an added layer of protection against decay-causing bacteria.

February is a short month, so schedule an appointment today for pediatric dentistry with Dr. Carollo in Florham Park, NJ. We also conveniently serve adults and children in Milburn, Morristown, Livingston and other communities in Northern New Jersey.

Invisalign from Dr. John Carollo is the Clear Frontrunner for Straightening Teeth

January 15, 2015

177000598If you’ve ever contemplated getting braces to straighten your teeth, then you should know that it’s never too late and you’re never too old to straighten your teeth. So, even if you’re an adult who is busy with a career and family, you can still enjoy the cosmetic and oral health benefits of having a smile without crowded or misaligned teeth. While metal braces are always an option, a better choice for you might be Invisalign® clear plastic aligners. With Invisalign, Dr. John A. Carollo in Florham Park, NJ, creates beautiful smiles almost, well, invisibly.

Your first step toward a smile with straighter teeth is a consultation with Dr. Carollo. Here, you and the dentist will discuss what you want to achieve with orthodontia. Dr. Carollo will also thoroughly examine and assess the health of your teeth and gums, checking for any signs of decay or gum disease that needs addressing before you begin orthodontic treatment.

The Invisalign Process

Then, we will take x-rays, photographs and impressions that are sent to Invisalign where they create a 3D image of your teeth. This imaging allows Dr. Carollo to build a treatment plan that shows how your teeth will move over the course of treatment and how they will look when treatment is completed.

Also from Dr. Carollo’s treatment plan, Invisalign fabricates the clear plastic aligners that you’ll wear to straighten your teeth. The aligners are removable, so you’ll be able to brush and floss your teeth as usual.

Your aligners are arranged in a series of sets for your upper and lower teeth. You’ll wear each set every day for approximately two weeks, and then you’ll move on to the next set. As you progress through each series, you’ll actually see your teeth gradually move into position. Others might not even notice because the Invisalign aligners are made of clear, smooth plastic. In most cases, Dr. Carollo’s have a straight smile in about one year.

Enjoy a Silent Night with Sleep Apnea Treatment in Florham Park, NJ

December 15, 2014

474189791Tell the truth: have you ever been told that you snore? Loudly. And often. Well, your snoring may be a sign of a serious condition—other than that elbow in the ribs every night. Sleep apnea is the cessation of breathing during sleep, and although it affects men, women and children, men seem to be the most susceptible. Sleep apnea can lead to a host of general health problems, but if diagnosed properly, it can be treated. For effective sleep apnea treatment in Florham Park, NJ, patients rely on Dr. John A. Carollo.

Aside from snoring, the other indicators of sleep apnea are:

  • Gasping for breath during the night
  • Daytime drowsiness
  • Headaches
  • Poor concentration

Health problems that have been linked to sleep apnea include high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and depression. Obviously, treating sleep apnea is more than just a matter of restoring yours and your bed partner’s good night’s rest. Sleep apnea treatment can genuinely save your life!

Sleep Apnea Treatment with Dr. Carollo

Obstructive airway sleep apnea is the most common form of this ailment. During the night, your airway may become obstructed by muscle and tissue that relax while you sleep. Hence, the snoring. When this obstruction interferes with breathing, your brain sends the body a signal to awaken in order to restart breathing. This may happen hundreds of times during a typical night.

When you come to Dr. Carollo for sleep apnea treatment, we’ll begin with an assessment and a questionnaire. If we determine that you have sleep apnea, then we will recommend solutions. For many years, the CPAP (Constant Positive Airway Pressure) machine was the only option. Many people find them to be uncomfortable. Today, thankfully, Dr. Carollo can fabricate an oral appliance designed to keep your airway open while you sleep. Wearing this, you and your bed partner can enjoy night after silent night of restful sleep.
