Sleep apnea is a lot more common than you may realize. What used to be classified as excessive snoring, sleep apnea has come to the surface a bit more. Our Florham Park, NJ office specializes in sleep apnea cases and we want you to know that it may be happening and you don’t even realize it yet. Whether it’s you or someone else that suffers from it, the disease can be awful for patients and their partners. Getting a full night’s worth of sleep is necessary for your health. It can affect all aspects of your life away from your bedroom. If you’re not getting the proper amount of sleep, it can carry over into your work life and put your job on the line. It can also penetrate into your social life as you may not be so inclined to meet friends out after work and instead opt for an early bedtime. We don’t want you suffering from this disease any longer. It’s time to take back your nights and give yourself the sleep you deserve.
What Exactly is Sleep Apnea?
If you want the literal definition, it’s the involuntary cessation of breathing during the course of the night whilst asleep. This can be scary not only for the person suffering from sleep apnea, but their partner as well. We’re not talking about just a couple seconds. Momentary loss of breathing can last upwards of twenty seconds. Think about that for a minute — twenty seconds of no breathing. Some people can’t hold their breath for that long. It’s important that this stop immediately, especially for patients in their later years.
There are many risks that come along with sleep apnea that include:
- High-blood pressure
- Heart disease
- Eye issues
These aren’t all of them, but the most common. Keeping your overall health in great shape is what we want to accomplish at our office.
How do you know if you or someone you know is suffering from sleep apnea? There are common things you or they can keep an eye out for:
- *A serious case of loud snoring
- Daytime sleepiness that happens daily
- Waking up out of breath for periods of the night
- Persistent dry mouth or headaches once you’re up
* It’s important to note that just because someone is a loud snorer doesn’t necessarily mean they’re suffering from sleep apnea. Scheduling a consultation with Dr. Carollo will help you figure out if you’re suffering from the disease.
